Sometimes, life is just hard.
When life gets too hard, that’s when we start to doubt that what we are doing is what we should be doing. And we forget that it’s only a season of life. We tend to get lost in the seasons and feel like they will never pass, that things will never get better.
It’s in those moments, we need to remind ourselves of who we are in Christ, and devote ourselves even more to reading and studying scripture and the singing of psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God with a thankful heart (Colossians 3:16 paraphrased).
These things are like a breath of fresh air to an otherwise defeated and downtrodden soul.
The Whale Analogy
Needing a breath of fresh air reminds me of one of the most amazing creatures–whales Think about how they come up for air. But they know that they are going right back down to the deep waters.
>Interesting fact: It is said that sperm whales can hold their breath for up to 90 minutes!
It may be a long way down (more than 3,000ft) and quite a while before they take their next breath. But in search of food, they are determined to dive deep.
How does this relate?
Well, we all go through times of struggle. It is said that as believers, we are in one of three places:
- in a storm,
- coming out of a storm, or
- about to head into a storm
And we don’t know when the next “good times” might be. Even so, we have to keep going, and we have to do the things that will give us the strength to get us through. Even when all we can see is dark and scary. Sometimes we need a breath of fresh air to get us to the next thing.
My Prayer:
Lord let me trust in You! Let me trust that you are doing something deeper in me when…
the kids won’t sleep.
all they do is fight all day long.
my marriage is falling apart.
we can’t make ends meet.
friends are battling horrific diseases.
not one thing is going right.
I feel broken and alone.
Let me not shy away from the scary deep just because trusting is hard! But when it’s hard, and I feel like life is crushing me, let me take a breath in you. May I find my rest, my breath–in You! Amen.
When I feel like life is spiraling out of control, nothing speaks to me more than God’s word, a word from a friend, or music to comfort my weary soul.
Because I know I need a breath (and lots of encouragement) to be able to make myself keep going, I am sharing my playlist that has ministered to me and many of you when we have felt life spiraling out of control.
Spiraling downward out of control is not the place God has for us. He gives us peace and comfort through His word, through song, and through his people so that we can muster enough trust to keep on keeping on. Even when life is hard, dark, lonesome, terrifying, or uncertain–in any kind of way.
Remember what Psalm 34:18 says:
The Lord is near the brokenhearted; He saves those crushed in spirit.
